July 4th Safety - “Too much ‘pow’ for your bow-wow”

Please make sure to go out and check your gates and make sure they are well secured.  Many pets bolt and get lost during this time of year, so you might want to make sure you have current ID tags attached to their collar. It may also be a good time to consider going out with your pets during potty breaks to monitor their safety and this allows them to see you visually for reassurance.

Make sure you have a ThunderShirt or other comfort device located and handy.  It’s also a good idea to have a safe place, such as a closet or other dark hidey-hole, prepared with blankets and other favorite items.

Stress-relieving, homeopathic, over-the-counter products such as Rescue Remedy and Feliway are available at pet supply stores. However, your veterinarian can also help!  Ask them about medications such as trazodone or gabapentin for these extra stressful times.  We can help too by compounding these medications into a topical cream or a tasty, flavored suspension.

If your buddy enjoys this season as much as you and won’t leave your side remember to keep them well hydrated and offer shade, especially for short-snouted breeds such as boxers, frenchies, and pugs.  Also check the temperature of the concrete/asphalt with your hand to make sure it’s not too hot for their foot pads.

Have a safe and happy 4th of July!
